Venue: ANZ Stadium, Sydney

Game one of the 2015 State of Origin series is just around the corner and both sides have now named their teams (we thought we’d have to wait until tonight the way the Queensland announcement was running). How does this compare to the sides that we selected last week?

New South Wales were first to announce their side, with a function held at the Star and an announcement made at 12.00pm AEST. Queensland announced their side a little later with a function at the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane at 12.35pm AEST, and final announcement coming just before 1.00pm AEST.

As most predicted for the Blues, the incumbent halves from the 2014 series didn’t survive as a pairing, however Trent Hodkinson has managed to hold onto the #7 jersey despite his poor club form. Josh Reynolds wasn’t so lucky as he is replaced by Mitchell Pearce who comes back into the side for the first time since that incident involving “the girl in the yellow dress”.

Josh Dugan got the nod at fullback following his stellar club form, with Matt Moylan unlucky to miss out. Jarryd Hayne will be hard to replace but at least with Dugan you get some Origin experience as he played games two and three last series at centre.

Other shocks, Luke Lewis missing out with Andrew Fifita preferred on the bench, and Josh Jackson replacing the injured Paul Gallen to start at lock, with Greg Bird also out and Merrin preferred for an impact off the bench. Will Hopoate also beat Kangaroo Alex Johnston to the vacant wing spot with Brett Morris sidelined.

So all in all, a good mix of youth and experience and Laurie Daley has been loyal to most of the side that got the job done last series, with the exception of Reynolds (couldn’t be picked on recent form) and Watmough/Lewis (Laurie Daley obviously looking to the future with his bench selections).

For Queensland, as expected the side pretty much names itself with just the one wing spot and a place on the bench up for grabs. Darius Boyd returned just in time for the Broncos to take up that vacant wing spot ahead of Dane Gagai. While Daly Cherry Evans has locked up a spot on the bench again, however there are suggestions he will miss game one due to injury.

Michael Morgan will be the likely beneficiary of DCE is ruled out with Mal Meninga liking a utility on the bench and Dylan Napa as 18th man doesn’t fit that description.
